The world’s richest cities are spread across multiple continents. In Europe, London and Paris often compete for the top spot, while in Asia, cities like Hong Kong and Tokyo dominate.
But when it comes to overall wealth, one city stands above the rest – not just on its continent, but on the entire plan.
The latest Henley & Partners’ World’s Wealthiest Cities Report 2024 confirms that New York is the richest city in the world, with an astonishing 349,500 millionaires, 675 centi-millionaires (those worth at least £100 million), and 60 billionaires.
The city’s economy is huge, generating around £1 trillion in GDP in 2023. That economy is driven by Wall Street, home to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq, the two largest stock exchanges in the world. The city’s securities industry alone employs over 181,000 people, generating billions in tax revenue and supporting a vast network of businesses.
